The hit song went to number one in their home country of Australia in December 1981, and then topped the New Zealand charts in February 1982. The song topped the Canadian charts in October 1982.[4] In the United States, the song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 on 6 November 1982 at No. 79, and reached No. 1 in January 1983 where it spent four non-consecutive weeks. It eventually sold over two million copies in the US alone. Billboard ranked it at No. 4 for 1983.[5]
In the UK, the song topped the charts in January and February 1983, and is the only Men at Work song to make the UK top 20.The song also went to No. 1 in Denmark, Ireland, Italy and Switzerland, and was a top 10 hit in many other countries. "Down Under" is perceived as a patriotic song in Australia; it remains popular and is often played at sporting events.
The chorus is really about the selling of Australia in many ways, the overdevelopment of the country. It was a song about the loss of spirit in that country. It's really about the plundering of the country by greedy people. It is ultimately about celebrating the country, but not in a nationalistic way and not in a flag-waving sense. It's really more than that

Diary of a Wimpy Kid

Vi kommer läsa en bok på engelskan som heter Diary of a Wimpy Kid, skriven och illustrerad av Jeff Kinney. Kinney är en amerikansk författare och spelutvecklare.

Om man följer länken nedan så kommer man till en webbsida där man både kan läsa texten och få den uppläst åt sig. Den fungerar både med telefon, surfplatta och dator. Man kommer då till bokens ”första sida” där man väljer kapitel genom att trycka på respektive siffra.

Vi kommer att läsa både på skolan och hemma som läsläxa. Boken är uppdelad i 50 korta kapitel.
Ni kommer att ha uppgifter som ska göras efter att ni läst vissa kapitel. Vi avslutar med en bokrecension.

The novel is called Diary of a wimpy kid - what does wimpy mean? If you don't know, look it up in a dictionary online.

First of all I want you to watch this short videoclip with an INTRO

You can find the novel online HERE (also to the right here on the blog), since you are alone (without me) on Tuesday I want you to start reading the novel and just read the whole lesson. In the end of the lesson I want you to send me a message on Schoolsoft and tell me on which page you are - how far did you read this lesson? This will help me when planning the following weeks.

Also, if there were things in the novel that you didn't understand. Write down questions and bring them with you on Friday and we will help each other understand the plot! (plot = handling)

Martin Luther King Day 

(The third Monday in January in USA)


Martin Luther King Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was an American Christian minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the Civil Rights Movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968. 

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, King is best known for advancing civil rights through nonviolence and civil disobedience, inspired by his Christian beliefs and the nonviolent activism of Mahatma Gandhi.

On October 14, 1964, King won the Nobel Peace Prize for combating racial inequality through nonviolent resistance.

In the United States *Declaration of Independence it says: 

(USAs självständighetsförklaring, som kom till 4 juli 1776)

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights (rättigheter som inte kan tas ifrån dem), that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness."

At the march for Jobs and Freedom in Washington DC in 1963 King held his iconic speech which would forever go down in history... (i talet citerar han ovanstående rad från självständighetsförklaringen)

I say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.

Bushfires in Australia impact extensive areas and cause property damage and have accounted for the deaths of 800 people in Australia since 1851. 

What is a bushfire?

Bushfires and  are common throughout Australia. 
They usually move quite slow, but have a high heat output. This means they pass in two to five minutes, but they can smoulder for days. Fire in the crown of the tree canopy can move rapidly.
Bushfires are a part of Australia's environment. Natural ecosystems have evolved with fire, and the landscape, along with its biological diversity, has been shaped by both historic and recent fires. 
Many of Australia's native plants are fire prone and very combustible, while numerous species depend on fire.

What factors create a favourable environment for bushfires to occur?

The basic factors which determine whether a bushfire will occur include the presence of fuel, oxygen and an ignition source. 

Fuel load

Fuel load describes the amount of fallen bark, leaf litter and small branches in the landscape. Generally speaking, the greater the fuel load, the hotter and more intense the fire. The natural oil within eucalypt trees promotes the combustion of fuel.

Wind speed

Wind acts to drive a fire by blowing the flames into fresh fuel and providing a continuous supply of oxygen. Wind also promotes the rapid spread of fire.

Temperature

The higher the temperature the more likely it is that a fire will start or continue to burn.

The size of the area burned by Australia's wildfires is the equivalent of more than 21,309 Central Parks put together.

Twenty-four people have been charged with deliberately setting brushfires, according to the New South Wales police.
The fires have been fueled by a prolonged drought, with December marking the driest month on record.
At least 26 people have been killed in the fires, including volunteer firefighters. 

At least 1700 homes have been destroyed across the country in the fires.
One billion animals could be impacted by the fires and 30 percent of the koala population is believed to have been killed.
Much of Australia's firefighting force are volunteers.
In December, the smoke was so heavy in Sydney that the air quality measured 11 times higher than the "hazardous" level.
Strong winds are contributing to the fires spreading and a firefighter was killed in December after his truck rolled over in high winds.
The mass evacuations that took place following New Year’s Eve across New South Wales and Victoria are understood to be one of the largest ever emergency movements of people in Australia.

Canberra is today ranked the worst city on the planet for air quality, with Australia Post forced to cancel all deliveries, and childcare centres, universities and museums closing.
